The factory has the input capacity of 35 tonnes of fresh cassava roots daily. The factory’s equipment were sourced from China with some touch of local technology. Al Fawaz has created a niche for itself with their brand; ‘Oke Ogun gari’. Their products are in 5kg, 10kg and 20kg sizes. CAVA 2 Nigeria has been working with the factory since its inception about four (04) years ago. The latest in the long list of CAVA 2 interventions was the Farmers’ Field Day and training on Good Agronomic Practices. A one hectare cassava demonstration farm was established for the SMEs farmers to demonstrate good agronomic practices. At the field day, training was conducted for about twenty farmers and the participants were then taken to the demonstration farm to confirm effects of making use of all steps involved in Good Agronomic Practices. The demonstration farm was divided into plots. The plots were randomly selected by
all the participants at the training. The yields of the plots were: 38.3tons/ha, 37.1 tons/ha, 38.7tons/ha and 39.4tons/ha respectively to provide the average yield of 38.3tons/ha. The high yield was due to high level of adoption of essentials in GAP and these include: use of 20cm stakes of improved Cassava variety; optimum plant spacing; timely and effective use of herbicides; supply of the missing stands at 2-4 weeks after planting; timely fertilizer application; effective weed control (manual and chemical control) and proper monitoring of the farm.
CAVA 2 Nigeria has helped the SME on mitigation against the reported losses during peeling of the cassava roots and other process technical issues, maintenance schedule for the factory vis a vis training on maintenance, linkage to market, clustering of smallholder farmers around the factory, sponsored participation at stakeholder meetings and exhibition at conferences and exhibitions.
